New World No 10 Fleetwood retains Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
Imperious back nine blows field away
Words: GolfPunk
There was an amazing finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship today, as Tommy Fleetwood came back in just 30 shots to take a two shot victory over Ross Fisher.
Tommy Fleetwood shot seven under for his final round. He started well with birdies on the second and third, before dropping a shot on the par four sixth to make the turn in 35.
But it was on his back nine that he hit the accelerator. Birdies on the 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th, and not a dropped shot saw him home in 30 and posting 65 for the day, and a final score of 22 under to retain the cup by two shots from Ross Fisher.
You will not see a better back nine on a final day this season. End of!
Ross Fisher battled hard, and a birdie at the 16th get him back to -20, having dropped a shot on the par three 15th. He had started the day with an eagle on the par five second, and was out in 32. But with dropped shots on the 10th and the 15th, he could simply not compete with Tommy Fleetwood’s sensational back nine.
And what of Rory McIlroy? Well, he finished T3 with Matthew Fitzpatrick on -18, four shots behind the winner.
Chris Paisley and Thomas Pieters were T5 on -17.
Here's Bernd Wiesberger just missing out on a hole-in-one......
