Jason Day announces Nike deal
For apparel and shoes
Words: James Greenwood
The rumor that Jason Day would sign a clothing deal with Nike has been running since September, but now it’s official.
“Joining Nike is a dream come true,” Day said in the press release. “The brand is synonymous with the world’s best athletes. I’m honored and can’t wait to be part of the team and working closely with Nike to take my game, and the sport of golf, to even higher levels.”
Day will be kitted out with Nike apparel at this week's Tournament of Champions in Kapalua.
Day renewed his equipment deal with TaylorMade back in September, so his deal with Nike is for apparel, shoes, hat and belt. But it is a show of strength from Nike to sign the world number one at a time when it has exited from the hardware and ball side of the business. We expected as much, and see this as just the first step in Nike re-invigorating their strong position in apparel and footwear.
This is what Jason had to say about his relationship with TaylorMade:
"Obviously, we're renewing with TaylorMade, and it's been -- I think I've been with them 10 years, since I turned professional. It's been amazing. To be able to renew and play the equipment and be successful with that equipment and know that equipment, I'm very excited about it.”
Jason Day’s return at this week’s Tournament of Champions in Hawaii will be the first time he has played since he withdrew from the second round of the Tour Championship on September 23rd.
He has been suffering from recurring back spasms, but he’s now had a decent rest, and we expect him to come out firing on all cylinders.
