With all due respect to Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods et al we think the Golf Writers Association of America (“GWAA”) were spot on in voting for Brooks Koepka as Player of the Year for 2019. Koepka’s performance at the four majors was undeniable impressive – to win one, finish second in two and tie fourth in the other is quite some feat.
Koepka received 44 percent of the vote to Rory McIlroy’s 36 percent while Woods, the 10 times winner of the honour, was third.
Koepka claimed his fourth major victory, the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in May, where having held a seven-shot lead he rather stumbled over the line, holding off a charging Dustin Johnson.
This was the second time Koepka had retained a major title and he joined the impressive list of Tiger Woods, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen as the only players to have defended two different major titles
The win at Bethpage also moved Koepka to the top spot in the World Ranking, a position he continues to hold.
"I am extremely humbled to receive this award for a second year in a row,” Koepka said. “The GWAA does so much for the game we all love, so to be their Player of the Year again is a real honour.’’
As well as his runner-up finishes at the Masters and U.S. Open, and the tied fourth place at the Open Championship, Koepka also won the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and C.J. Cup. He also had nine top-10s in 2019.
Well done Brooks Koepka – we are not worthy!
The GWAA female Player of the Year was Jin Young Ko with Scott McCarron senior Player of the Year.
